Member of Azerbaijani Parliament Agil Abbas once again made headlines in the local media with his remarks. On December 27, in a parliamentary session Abbas commented on country’s construction policy in regained territories in Karabakh as a result of the 2020 war against Armenia and came up with a suggestion in order to spend less.
Student construction forces have to be created in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani youth can give up his life in Karabakh. So why not go there now and work voluntarily? They will also get salary,
He said during his speech
Abbas also recommended time duration and approximate salary for every student to be involved in his plan, saying each would work for 2 months to receive from 300 to 500 manats.
“2 months is not a long time, so better to spend it [in construction of Karabakh] than wandering like an idle. This means workforce of up to 10 thousand people,” Abbas added.
Abbas’ remarks attracted criticism from members of civil society in Azerbaijan, who mainly compared his imaginary plan to modern-day slavery.
“The only thing parliamentaries haven’t done so far was to see students as cheap workforce (or free, in this context), and it happened now too,” Javid Agha, social media observer and researcher tweeted. “How else should they insult you so you would awake?” he added, addressing the country’s youth.
