A “Letters Beyond Bars” campaign will be held in Berlin to draw attention to the situation of imprisoned journalists and independent media workers in Azerbaijan.
The event, jointly organized by Mikroskop Media and the “Exile Team,” an organization supporting exiled journalists, will take place as part of “Berlin Freedom Week.”
The campaign aims to inform people living in Berlin from various backgrounds about the journalists imprisoned in Azerbaijan, their work, and their current situation. At the event, which includes an exhibition and a letter-writing campaign, participants will be able to write letters of support and solidarity to the journalists.
More than 30 journalists are currently behind bars in Azerbaijan amid an ongoing crackdown on independent media. As journalists working in exile, we know how important it is to make sure their voices are not forgotten.
“What is “Berlin Freedom Week”?
Every year, on the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a week-long series of events called “Berlin Freedom Week” is organized in the capital. Events, performances and concerts, panel discussions, and more dedicated to freedom, democracy, and human rights are held at various locations throughout the city.
This year, “Berlin Freedom Week” will feature a total of 163 events at 102 venues. This event, hosted by Mikroskop Media and the “Exile Team,” is the only one organized related to Azerbaijan.

When and where will the event be held?
The “Letters Beyond Bars” campaign will run all day on November 10, from 11:00 to 17:00. At 12:00, there will be a press statement on the state of journalism in Azerbaijan, the health of imprisoned journalists, and their unlawful detention.
The event will be held at the “Publix” innovation and media center, one of Berlin’s prestigious initiatives. Opened in 2024, this complex serves as a shared ecosystem that brings together independent journalists, non-governmental organizations, and media professionals.
