On January 4, Azerbaijan’s big flour and bread producers circulated a letter among local media, announcing the price increases for flour and bread. According to the letter, the price of 50 kg of flour is projected to rise from 26 manats to 36 manats, and bread is likely to see price increase around 10-15 gapiks (coins), which is 50 gapiks at the moment.
In the letter reason behind increases is explained as the termination of state subsidies to flour producers as of late December in 2021.
“As the latest subsidy plan was valid only until the end of December 2021, now in order to continue activities of flour producers, provide our country with this strategic commodity, and prevent danger of scarcity, there is necessity to adjust price of flour to that of wheat,” the letter read.
A day before the announcement, reports of price increases already came from different regions of Azerbaijan.
Journalist Shamshad Agha wrote on Facebook that in rural districts price of 50 kg of flour rose from 27 manats to 38, and that of bread from 50 gapiks to 70. He reported that in Masalli stores even stopped sales of flour due to scarcity.
