The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) looked into 6 applicants’ cases from Azerbaijan. In two cases, the parties held an agreement, and in the other four, the rulings were held in favour of the applicants.
One of the applicants is Jahangir Hajiyev, former chair of the Board of Azerbaijan International Bank, who is now in prison.
The cases and amounts to be paid:
- Jahangir Hajiyev claimed that his right to freedom and immunity were breached. According to the ruling, the government has to pay him 3500 euros.
- Underage Amrah Salmanov claimed that he was wrongfully accused of robbery and arrested. The government owes him 12000 euros for moral damage and 1000 euros for legal expenses.
- Ulvi Nuriyev and Joshgun Salahov were arrested in a peaceful opposition rally in 2013. The government will have to pay them in total 16000 euros.
- Mahammad Mustafayev and Jeyhun Suleymanov appealed with complaint that the compensation paid to them due to their unlawful arrest was low. Now government owes them each 7500 euros.
In total, the Azerbaijani government owes 47500 euros to 4 applicants.
