On April 6, Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev met in Brussels with the President of the Council of Europe Charles Michel and the Prime Minister of Armenia Nikol Pashinyan. The trilateral meeting, which was the trio’s second meeting since December, lasted about 4 hours. Afterwards Michel told the press that Aliyev and Pashinyan wanted to “move rapidly towards a peace agreement between the two countries”.
What issues were discussed at the meeting:
- Restoration of communications between Armenia and Azerbaijan, overall in the South Caucasus, was discussed.
- It was agreed to instruct the foreign ministers to start working on drafting a future peace agreement.
- It was decided to convene a Joint Border Commission by the end of April to delimit and demarcate the borders.
The mandate of the Joint Border Commission includes:
- Delimitation of the bilateral border between Azerbaijan and Armenia;
- To ensure stable security along and near the border.
The statement said that Ilham Aliyev and Nikol Pashinyan agreed to follow the results of the meetings and stay in touch.
