Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev touched upon the topic of the Farrukh village and a mountain of the same name in Karabakh on April 12, while chairing a meeting to discuss the results of the first quarter of 2022.
The village and the mountain, which are located in Karabakh near the line of contact between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops, have been at the center of attention since mid March as the reports of fighting between the troops unfolded. After Armenian authorities in Karabakh claimed casualties, and stated that the village was taken by Azerbaijan, Defense Ministry of Russia, who has its own troops in Karabakh as peacekeepers, released a statement that the conflict was mediated and Azerbaijanis withdrew. Azerbaijan’s Defense Ministry denied the statement.
Aliyev, talking about the Farrukh village [which Armenians call Parukh] for the first time ever since the hostilities, has said that the Azerbaijani army controls the Farrukh mountain.
“I think now there’s no one in the world that doesn’t recognize the Farrukh mountain. The Farrukh mountain, a big mountain of Azerbaijan, is today under our control, the Azerbaijani flag is waving there.”
Aliyev also stressed the strategic importance of the mountain for Azerbaijan.
“Khachinchay water dam is just under the Farrukh mountain and next to the Farrukh village. Armenians’ military locations put the use of the dam under danger. It was a big source of danger. Continuously they shot fires from there and other villages in the direction of Aghdam.”
