Political activist Samir Ashurov, deported from Germany to Azerbaijan in late March this year, was arrested in Baku on April 19. His family members, who spread the word on social media, claimed that Ashurov was detained on made-up charges.

Elshad Hajiyev, head of the Interior Ministry’s press service, told Qafqazinfo that Ashurov had been detained for injuring another person.

Elshan Nabiyev, a resident of Sheki, was stabbed in the abdomen in a personal conflict with Ashurov in the Nizami district of the capital on April 19 at about 9 p.m. A criminal case under Article 126 of the Criminal Code was launched in Nizami police department. Samir Ashurov was detained and brought to justice.

Hajiyev stated

The ministry spokesperson added that the investigation is underway.

Who is Samir Ashurov: The 37-year-old political activist emigrated to Germany in September 2018, but was refused asylum. He was returned to Azerbaijan on March 29, 2022. On April 1, he was summoned to the Prosecutor General’s Office for questioning as a witness on the so-called “asylum seeker business” case and was released.
